Music for Baby Boomers

“God gave us memory so that we might have roses in December.” – J.M. Barrie

All of us are able to connect specific images, smells, or tastes to the muffled memories of our past, and one of our most intense connections to the past comes from listening to music. Indeed, there's something almost mystical about the power of music to take us back to earlier times in our lives. If, for example, I sat down today and listened to James Taylor's
Sweet Baby James, I would be able to begin a dissertation about what life was like in Deming, NM, in 1973. Music helps me not only remember the past, but experience it as if I had returned to an earlier time of my life in a time machine.

For those of us old enough to remember the 50s, 60s, and 70s, we possess more than our share of "time machine" opportunities from listening to the oldies. When we were young the radio fed us a steady diet of popular songs, and the albums we purchased often became sacred objects, played over and over until they unwittingly defined specific times in our lives.

The opening guitar lick of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band can bring back such distinct memories for many baby boomers that they will remember where they were and what they were doing when they first heard it. No doubt this is true for many other classic albums and songs from the time, and most boomers would have no problem making a list of the specific music that serves as a soundtrack for their lives.

This web page provides links to music that should evoke a variety of memories, thoughts, and emotions for baby boomers. I invite my fellow boomers to follow the links below and let the memories flow. Use the songs on this page as a way to begin a journey back in time. I hope the memories are good one.
